This site is intended to be fluid, dynamic, and interactive. Sharing knowledge and experience is one way we learn new things. And, with technology's ever-increasing impact on our daily lives, we need to understand how it all works and how to put it to best use.

Let's build a Q&A go-to site for Computers and Internet general help. Feel free to chime in anytime!

Are we there yet?

The Tower of "Babble"?

One of the most frustrating things about our modern-day digital world is the confusion and non-interactivity of so many devices and applications. Different manufacturers and programmers are all over the lot with which computer language or code they use for their products and applications; and which hardware components; and which networking protocols; which file extensions; which GUI (Graphical User Interface); which templates; which widgets, gadgets; and on and on it goes!

And, as technology improves and devices get smaller and smaller, manufacturers must find ways to somehow take advantage of all their previous efforts; when similarly-intended devices were larger and more cumbersome, and could contain more electronics, and more storage, and bulkier applications. Indeed, today's high-tech cellphones have barely begun to open the doors of opportunity that (I believe!) will continue to evolve and will become necessary, even permanent, adjuncts to our daily lives; with regard to personal computing and communications in general. Soon, people will be "in-touch" constantly, if they wish to be, (and if they can afford the rates the communications companies are sure to charge).

Perhaps someday, when the dust settles down from the now somewhat chaotic frenzy for getting only the "best there is" out there; maybe all things digital and electronic will be designed to seamlessly communicate with each other (the devices themselves) and will be capable of carrying out their intended functions through mere thought input!

What a journey!

HTML is an acronym for "HyperText Markup Language", which is the computer code used to create websites, web-pages, and various web applications. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTML for more details.

"URL" is an acronym for "Uniform Resource Locator"; and represents a specific "web-address" for a particular website, web-page, or other (online) stored document or file. An example of a URL is "http://www.google.com/". Certain characters (period, slash, etc.) represent specific path nomenclature; i.e., to point to certain servers, certain data storage blocks, etc.

    See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Url for more details.

"PC" means "Personal Computer"; which is the commonly used term to describe a desktop computer device, which typically includes a CPU (Central Processing Unit), keyboard, mouse, and monitor. "PC" has become more or less associated with DOS and Windows-based devices; as opposed to Apple's "Mac", which operates through non-DOS, non-Windows protocols; though PC can actually mean any such device.

A "Mac" is a personal computer made by Apple Computer Company. "Mac" is short for "Macintosh", Apple's flagship computer line.

A "web browser" is a computer application which is designed for accessing Internet documents and other data. Some examples of web browsers are: Internet Explorer (Microsoft), Firefox (Mozilla), Opera (Opera Software), Chrome (Google), Safari (Apple) and Netscape (AOL). There are others, as well, but these are the most popular.
